Artist's Solve Problems is all about overcoming any limitations put in front of you, my limitation was limiting my medium to pen. With a simple pen, I created something I love to do, which is showjumping. The horse in the images below is jumping an imaginary fence, or in this case, the limitation. I've spent around five hours creating the piece but I don't think I'll ever be done.
I prefer the image to be light rather than define all the darker spaces because I believe that would almost overwhelm the viewer. If the image is too dark, then it would take away from the overall image. When the piece is light, you are able analyze the image without much distaste.
I began to create my piece by taking an image online and tracing the minor details lightly with pencil. When I was satisfied with the pencil drawing, I began to lightly erase the pencil marks until there was just light lines so it wouldn't show through when I began the pointillism. Pointillism is a form of art style where there are no fine lines, just dots creating the shading and the illusion of light. This particular art style takes a few, if not many, hours to properly formulate. I spent the first two hours studying the image online and trying to darken the muscles and adding shading. Despite the fact that I was satisfied and many others thought it was a lovely image, my art teacher continued to push me about going darker. But I was afraid of going darker, in fear it would mess up and take away from the whole image. I am afraid of the dark. He photo copied the original piece, which is the bottom image, and told me to go darker on the copy, which is the top image. I still believe that the original is better, but we each have different tastes. Every artist is different, which is OK. Which is why i'm saying, it's OK to be afraid of the dark.
